# AMAS Overview

> The Artaios Multi Agent System: the YAML runtime behind every Artaios agent

**AMAS** — the **Artaios Multi Agent System** — is the execution runtime behind
every Artaios agent. An agent is described as a YAML configuration (agents,
models, prompts, tools, knowledge, memory and the connections between them),
and AMAS runs it.

## Do I need this section?

Most users do not. The Agent Builder in Artaios creates and edits this
configuration for you, and the integration guides in the main
[Documentation](https://docs.artaios.ai/documentation/getting-started/connecting-your-agent.md) work the
same way whether or not you ever look at the YAML.

Read on if you want to:

* write or review an agent's YAML by hand
* build multi-agent systems with the workflow or supervisor pattern
* use structured output, variables, memory or human-in-the-loop
* understand exactly how an agent behaves at runtime

## What AMAS provides

* **Two orchestration patterns.** A *workflow* runs agents along defined edges,
including conditional routing. A *supervisor* delegates to other agents.
* **Declarative configuration.** Readable, version-controllable YAML instead
  of code.
* **Typed data between agents.** Structured output and variables.
* **Knowledge, tools and memory.** Knowledge bases, toolkits, MCP servers and a
  memory system.
* **Tracing.** Every run is observable.
